Barbering

Do you dream of opening up your own barbershop? Do you want to provide your customers with the full barbershop experience?  The barbering courses at Otero College will teach you the fundamental skills of the trade and take you all the way to advanced techniques and practices that your clients will seek out.

A subdiscipline of cosmetology, barbering focuses primarily on haircutting, hairstyling and shaving for men. Although as a barber you may cut women and children's hair, the discipline has generally focused on men. Your tools of the trade will include clippers and shears, shavers and razors, disinfectants and hair styling products, and of course, the barbershop chair.

Otero's barbering program will also allow you to practice your classroom skills in a real-world working environment. During the public salon hours, you will be able to apply what you learn, including haircutting, hair styling, shaving and skin care techniques.

The Cosmetology Salon is open in the fall, summer, and spring. Walk-in appointments are accepted; however, appointments are encouraged. For dates or to make an appointment with students at the salon, contact 384-6990. All work is supervised by instructors.

The Otero College Barbering program will meet the Colorado State Board of Barber and Cosmetology credit hour requirements. One certificate option exists within this program at 50 credit hours

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics expects employment in cosmetology careers to grow faster than the average for all occupations between 2018 and 2028, by about 8%.
