Community Health Worker

Do you enjoy advocating for others and have a commitment to social justice? If so, becoming a Community Health Worker will provide you with a rewarding career in line with your passions. Similar to becoming a social worker, this one-semester certificate prepares individuals to coordinate resources, provide social support and informal counseling, while advocating for individual and community health needs. 

Study from home with full access to Otero faculty for support. Scholarships and Financial Aid available for those who qualify.

All of the program-specific courses are delivered in an online format. A 3-credit, 135 hour internship is required, consisting of 120 hours of field work and a 15 hours seminar. Internship requirements including criminal background check, drug screen, and CPR certification.

Otero College Students:
Apply for general college admission to Otero College.

All general education courses will be completed on the Otero campus with all program-specific courses completed online.

LCC Community Health Worker - Health Navigator Lamar Community College Students:
Apply for general college admission to Lamar Community College and Otero College.

All general education courses will be completed on the Lamar Community College campus with all program-specific courses completed online.

TSC Community Health Worker - Health Navigator Trinidad State College Students:
Apply for general college admission to Trinidad State College and Otero College.

All general education courses will be completed on the Trinidad State College campus with all program-specific courses completed online.


In addition, the student is required to:

  1. Be a graduate of an accredited high school or equivalent.
  2. Complete a background check and drug screen:
    1. Practicum facilities require students to complete a drug screen prior to participating in field experience. This will be arranged through the college. Please plan to follow the procedures promptly when notified.
    2. Students are required to take and pass the background check available at this web site address: cccs.castlebranch.com/.

Note: The the background check fee is $80.20 and is the responsibility of the students and is in addition to the cost of tuition and fees. The drug screening test will be done randomly on campus.
